Hell’s Best Kept Secret

“Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Sovereign Lord. Rather, am I not pleased when they turn from their ways and live?” -Ezekiel 18:23. Therefore, repent and be saved!

“The truth is that according to the Bible we don’t automatically go to Heaven. In fact, Hell- not Heaven- is our default destination. Unless our sin problem is solved once and for all, we can’t enter Heaven. That’s the bad news. But once that’s straight in our minds we’re ready to hear the good news of Jesus Christ.” -Eternal Perspective Ministries

“Listening to the rhetoric this election season, one might assume that a new batch of politicians in Washington will solve the problems facing this country, not to mention the planet. Elect candidate X, and he or she will tackle global warming, solve the health-care crisis, eliminate poverty, right the economy, and unite a divided country.  For two problems, however, no politician dares offer a solution: death and evil.” –Philip Yancy, Christianity Today, May 2008

The issue isn’t just forgiveness but reconciliation. Think about what happens when one friend betrays another. Say for instance, that Mike writes a nasty lie about David on Facebook. Rumors spread throughout the school. David is really hurt, but he’s hoping he and Mike can be friends again. So he texts Mike, “I 4give u.” Mike ignores the text message. In fact, the next day he posts another rumor about David.     Forgiveness was offered, but has it been accepted? No Has the friendship been restored? No.     Reconciliation takes more than just an offer of forgiveness. Reconciliation means that both sides agree that a wrong was committed, the offender accepts forgiveness, and the two renew their friendship.     Likewise, people have sinned against God. God offers forgiveness—in fact, that’s why, Jesus died on the cross, to demonstrate Gods love for people even while they are still sinners (Romans 5:8). But unfortunately, many people don’t accept Gods offer—they continue to ignore God and act like a friendship with him means nothing to them. They refuse to live God’s way and remain alienated from God.     Now, let’s look at what the word hell means. It simply means “separation from God.” It’s the place for people who want nothing to do with God. Heaven is not for anyone who doesn’t want to spend eternity in God’s presence.     God offers each of us reconciliation and forgiveness and eternal life with him. But if you spend your whole life ignoring or avoiding life with God, he’s not going to compel you to live with him. Hell is the God-free alternative.

Jesus is Light of the world!

It is written: “This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of the light because their deeds were evil.  Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.” –John 3:19-21  Jesus: “I am the light of the world. He who follows me will never walk in darkness. -John 8:12

“But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes. ‘Friend,’ he asked, ‘how did you get in here without wedding clothes?’ The man was speechless. Then the king told the attendants, ‘Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’” -Matthew 22:11-13

“Unfortunately, many people in our culture have lost the simple truth that eternal separation from God- hell- is the consequence of our sin. Worse, they’ve failed to recognize that the forgiveness and grace of his son, Jesus Christ, is the only way we can become “right” with God. They sense no urgency to think about this or any other spiritual question. For them, heaven and hell are merely metaphors. The race for wealth, pleasure and prestige has kept them from realizing that where they’ll spend eternity is one of the greatest issues of our existence. –David Brickner, Jews For Jesus
